A Place of Refuge and New Beginnings
Morning: Joshua 19-20
Evening: Luke 5:17-39
In Joshua 20, God established cities of refuge—places where someone who had accidentally caused harm could find safety until justice was determined. These cities were a picture of God’s mercy, providing protection and a second chance. In Luke 5, we see another form of refuge in Jesus Christ. The paralyzed man, carried by his friends, found healing in Jesus, and Levi, the tax collector, found a new beginning when Jesus called him to follow.
Just as the cities of refuge provided safety for those in distress, Jesus is our ultimate refuge. No matter our past mistakes, no matter how broken we feel, He welcomes us with grace. He offers not just protection but complete renewal. Like Levi, we must be willing to leave behind our old ways and follow Him into something new.

- Is there something God is calling me to leave behind in order to follow Him more closely?
- How can I demonstrate faith like the friends of the paralyzed man, both in my own life and by bringing others to Jesus?
- Do I see myself as beyond God’s grace, or do I trust that He welcomes me, no matter my past?
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for being my refuge and my strength. When I feel lost, remind me that You are always near, offering grace and renewal. Help me to trust in Your healing power, both spiritually and physically, and to step boldly into the new life You have for me. Give me the courage to leave behind what no longer serves Your purpose in my life. May I be like the friends of the paralyzed man, bringing others to You through my faith and actions. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
