He Heard from the Fire, and Still Speaks Through the Flame
Morning: 1 Kings 10–11
Evening: Luke 24:1–35
Solomon reached a level of splendor that left even foreign royalty breathless. The Queen of Sheba marveled at his wisdom and wealth (1 Kings 10). But in the very next chapter, the wisest man on earth began his downfall—not by war or external threat, but by the slow seduction of foreign wives and their gods. His heart was “not perfect with the Lord his God” (1 Kings 11:4), and his compromise led to national division.
Contrast this with Luke 24, where two disciples trudging along the road to Emmaus are joined by a stranger. Their hopes had died with Jesus—but as He walked with them and opened the Scriptures, their hearts “burned within” (v. 32). In their sorrow, they didn’t recognize Him at first, but the fire in their hearts revealed His presence.
Solomon had glory on the outside but drifted inside. The Emmaus disciples were broken on the outside, but their hearts came alive when Jesus spoke.
God isn’t after outward beauty or status—He wants hearts that burn for Him. Whether seated on a throne or walking a dusty road, the question is the same: Is your heart still burning for the Lord?

A Prayer for Today
Lord, I don’t want to be like Solomon—surrounded by blessings but drifting in my heart. Guard me from the slow fade of compromise. Keep my heart soft and sensitive to You. Like the disciples on the road, may Your Word burn within me again. Walk with me in my confusion, and open my eyes to Your presence. Rekindle in me a holy fire. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
