Is God sovereign through our free will?
God is absolutely sovereign—He exists beyond the limits of time and space, which means He’s not bound by the same constraints we are. He knows every outcome of every choice we make, whether good or bad. Nothing is hidden from Him. But here’s the amazing part: even with all that knowledge and power, God still honors our free will. He doesn’t force us into anything.
Think about Genesis 2:19, where Adam names the animals. God could have just named them Himself, right? He already knew every possible name Adam could come up with! But instead, He let Adam make those decisions freely. That shows how much God respects our freedom to choose.
Another example is in Jude 1:9-11, where Michael the Archangel is sent to protect Moses’ body. Scholars think this might’ve been because the Israelites, who had a habit of slipping into idolatry, could have turned Moses into an object of worship instead of focusing on God. God acted to protect His people, but He didn’t take away their freedom to worship Him—or to choose otherwise.
These stories highlight how God works. He knows our intentions and the outcomes of our choices before we’re even aware of them, yet He’s faithful to guide and protect us in ways that don’t override our free will. God isn’t a tyrant who forces His will on us; He’s gracious and kind, giving us the freedom to respond to Him.
And if you ever read a scripture that doesn’t seem to fit with what you’ve been taught, it’s worth stepping back and asking if the issue is with the teaching, not with God’s Word. God’s nature doesn’t change, and His sovereignty and love always go hand in hand.
