No Looking Back
Morning: Judges 12-14
Evening: Luke 9:37-62
In Judges 12–14, we witness the decline of Israel’s judges, marked by internal strife, pride, and impulsiveness. Jephthah’s conflict with the Ephraimites, followed by Samson’s extraordinary yet flawed beginnings, reveals a generation of leaders with both power and weakness. Samson was chosen before birth, empowered by the Spirit of God, yet often led by his own desires.
Meanwhile, Luke 9:37–62 shows Jesus dealing with His disciples’ lack of faith, the selfish ambition of His followers, and the excuses of those hesitant to follow Him. Jesus makes one truth abundantly clear: following Him requires full commitment. “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62, KJV).
From Judges to Luke, we are reminded that God doesn’t just want moments of obedience—He wants our whole hearts. God can use flawed people, but He calls us to walk forward with eyes fixed on Him, not distracted by past comforts or worldly desires.
Key Insights
- God Can Use Imperfect People – Samson and Jephthah were flawed, yet God still accomplished His purposes through them (Judges 12–14).
- Spiritual Power Requires Spiritual Maturity – Samson was gifted but lacked self-control; without maturity, power can be destructive.
- Following Jesus Costs Something – Jesus makes clear that discipleship means letting go of excuses, attachments, and distractions (Luke 9:57–62).
- God Desires Wholehearted Devotion – Partial surrender or delayed obedience doesn’t honor the Lord.
- Don’t Look Back – The journey with Christ is forward-moving; looking back can cause us to lose focus and stumble.
Connection to Other Scripture
- Philippians 3:13–14 (KJV): “Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…”
- James 1:8 (KJV): “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
- Hebrews 12:1–2 (KJV): “Let us lay aside every weight… and let us run with patience the race… Looking unto Jesus…”
Questions to Reflect On
- Am I living a life of forward momentum in Christ, or am I still holding on to things from the past?
- What distractions or excuses have kept me from fully following Jesus?
- Do I ever rely on my own strength or gifting instead of seeking spiritual maturity and God’s guidance?
- How do I respond when God calls me to leave my comfort zone or make a sacrifice?
- What would it look like to put my hand to the plough and not look back today?
A Prayer for Today
Lord, help me to follow You with my whole heart. I confess the times I’ve looked back, made excuses, or let pride lead me. Thank You for using me in my weakness and for calling me forward in faith. Strengthen me to walk with focus, maturity, and devotion. I want to put my hand to the plough and press toward all You’ve called me to. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
