Possessing What God Has Given

Morning: Joshua 16-18
Evening: Luke 5:1-16

The tribes of Israel had received their inheritance, but they still had to take possession of it. In Joshua 17:12, we read, “Yet the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of those cities; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.” Though the land was promised, they hesitated to fully claim it. Similarly, in Luke 5, we see Peter struggling to trust Jesus when He tells him to cast his net again after an unproductive night. Yet, when Peter obeys, he receives a miraculous catch.

How often do we hesitate to step into the blessings God has already set before us? Whether it’s fear, doubt, or complacency, we sometimes live below the fullness of what God has for us. Like Israel, we might allow obstacles to remain in our lives, or like Peter, we might struggle to trust when things seem impossible. But God calls us to faith and action—He has already made the way, and we must step forward to claim it.

Key Insights

  1. God’s Promises Require Our Action – The land was given to Israel, but they had to fight for full possession. Likewise, God has given us spiritual blessings, but we must walk in faith to experience them.
  2. Doubt Limits Our Blessings – Peter almost missed his miracle because he relied on past failure instead of Jesus’ word. Our perspective must shift from what we see to what God has said.
  3. Partial Obedience Hinders Growth – The Israelites left some Canaanites in the land, leading to future struggles. We must fully surrender to God’s will, not just partially.
  4. God’s Power is Greater than Our Weakness – Peter felt unworthy in the presence of Jesus, but Jesus called him anyway. Our past failures don’t disqualify us from God’s calling.
  5. Faith Leads to Abundance – When Peter obeyed, his nets were overflowing. God’s blessings are more than enough when we trust Him completely.

Connection to Other Scripture

  • Ephesians 1:3 (KJV): “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”
  • Deuteronomy 1:8 (KJV): “Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the Lord sware unto your fathers.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7 (KJV): “For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Questions to Reflect On

  1. Are there areas in my life where I am hesitating to step into God’s promises?
  2. Am I allowing fear or doubt to keep me from receiving what God has already given?
  3. What “Canaanites” (sins, habits, doubts) am I tolerating instead of driving out?
  4. Like Peter, am I willing to obey even when it doesn’t make sense?
  5. How can I take a step of faith today toward what God has called me to do?

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promises and blessings You have given me. Help me to walk in faith and not be hindered by fear, doubt, or complacency. Strengthen me to fully claim the spiritual inheritance You have prepared for me. Teach me to trust You even when things seem impossible, and give me the courage to act on Your Word. I surrender my doubts, my failures, and my hesitations into Your hands. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
