Rest in God’s Promises, Stand in His Truth

Morning: Joshua 21-22
Evening: Luke 6:1-26

In Joshua 21, we see a powerful declaration: “There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.” (Joshua 21:45, KJV). God had fulfilled every promise He made to Israel, giving them rest in the land He had promised. But in Joshua 22, we also see a potential misunderstanding between the tribes, reminding us how quickly division can arise when trust is lacking.

Similarly, in Luke 6, Jesus challenges the religious leaders and teaches what it truly means to follow Him. The Pharisees were more concerned with rules than with the heart of God’s law—showing mercy and love. Jesus calls His followers to live differently, to love even their enemies, and to find their blessing not in worldly success but in being faithful to God.

Just as Israel had to trust God’s faithfulness and navigate challenges without losing unity, we are called to rest in God’s promises and stand firm in His truth, even when the world misunderstands or opposes us.

Key Insights

  1. God Always Keeps His Promises – Joshua 21:45 reminds us that God is faithful in fulfilling His word. If He has spoken it, He will bring it to pass.
  2. Unity Requires Communication and Understanding – In Joshua 22, the tribes almost went to war over a misunderstanding. We must seek clarity and extend grace rather than jumping to conclusions.
  3. True Rest Comes from God – Israel found rest when they trusted in God’s promises. Likewise, Jesus invites us to find our rest in Him, not in striving for the world’s approval.
  4. Blessings Are Different in God’s Kingdom – Luke 6:20-26 reminds us that those who suffer for righteousness are truly blessed, while those who seek comfort in worldly riches and approval may miss what truly matters.
  5. Love and Mercy Triumph Over Legalism – Jesus shows that love and compassion are greater than rigid traditions. He calls us to a life that reflects God’s heart rather than just outward rule-following.

Connection to Other Scripture

  • Numbers 23:19 (KJV): “God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” – God’s promises are sure.
  • Matthew 11:28-29 (KJV): “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” – True rest is found in Jesus.
  • Romans 12:18 (KJV): “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” – Like the tribes in Joshua 22, we should pursue peace through understanding.

Questions to Reflect On

  1. Do I fully trust in God’s promises, or do I struggle with doubt and fear?
  2. How can I be more intentional about seeking understanding and unity in my relationships?
  3. Am I more focused on rules and appearances, or do I truly reflect Christ’s love and mercy?
  4. Where do I find my sense of rest and fulfillment—in God or in worldly success?
  5. How can I live out Jesus’ call to love my enemies and show kindness to those who mistreat me?

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for being faithful to Your promises. Help me to rest in the assurance that all You have spoken will come to pass. Give me a heart of understanding and grace, that I may seek peace and unity with others. Teach me to value what truly matters in Your kingdom rather than chasing after the world’s approval. Fill me with Your love so that I may reflect Your mercy in all I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
