The Call to Serve and Obey

Morning: Exodus 22-24
Evening: Matthew 20:17-34

Life is filled with choices—choices to serve others, to obey God, and to walk humbly in His ways. In Exodus 22-24, God lays out laws that emphasize justice, mercy, and devotion to Him. He calls His people to uphold righteousness, care for the vulnerable, and remain faithful in their covenant with Him. In Matthew 20:17-34, Jesus, on His way to the cross, teaches His disciples that true greatness is found in serving others. His ultimate act of love—giving His life as a ransom for many—demonstrates the heart of servanthood.

These passages remind us that obedience and servanthood go hand in hand. God does not just call us to follow rules but to reflect His heart in how we live and love. True obedience is not just about avoiding wrongdoing but actively pursuing justice, kindness, and humility before God.

Key Insights

  1. God Calls Us to Justice and Compassion – In Exodus 22-24, God commands His people to care for the widow, the orphan, and the stranger, showing His heart for justice and mercy (Exodus 22:22-23). Our obedience to God is demonstrated in how we treat others.
  2. Greatness in God’s Kingdom Comes Through Service – Jesus reminds us in Matthew 20:26-28 that leadership is not about power but about serving others with humility, just as He did.
  3. Obedience Requires Trust in God’s Promises – God promises to be with His people if they obey Him (Exodus 23:20-22). Likewise, Jesus assures His disciples that following Him, even to suffering, leads to eternal reward.
  4. God Hears the Cry of the Needy – Just as He hears the oppressed in Exodus 22:23, Jesus responds with compassion to the blind men who cry out to Him in Matthew 20:30-34. He is still the God who listens to our cries today.
  5. Following Jesus Means a Shift in Perspective – The disciples expected a powerful ruler, but Jesus showed them that true power is in laying down one’s life for others (Matthew 20:28). Obedience to God often challenges our expectations but leads to His greater purpose.

Connection to Other Scripture

  • Micah 6:8 – “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (KJV) – This verse echoes God’s call in Exodus 22-24 and Christ’s example in Matthew 20.
  • Philippians 2:5-7 – Jesus, though fully God, humbled Himself as a servant, showing us the way to true greatness.

A Prayer for Today

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to walk in justice, mercy, and humility before You. Help me to serve others with the same love that Jesus demonstrated, laying down my pride and selfish desires. Teach me to trust in Your promises and obey Your commands, even when it is difficult. Open my eyes to the needs around me, and give me the grace to respond with kindness and compassion. May my life reflect Your heart, and may I find true greatness in serving You and those You have placed in my path. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
