The Heart Behind the Offering
Morning: Exodus 37-38
Evening: Matthew 23:23-39
In Exodus 37-38, we see the meticulous construction of the Tabernacle and its furnishings, each piece crafted according to God’s precise instructions. The people gave freely—gold, silver, and labor—to build a dwelling place for God’s presence. Their offerings were not just materials; they were expressions of devotion.
Jesus, in Matthew 23:23-39, confronts the Pharisees for focusing on outward religious acts while neglecting justice, mercy, and faith. Their offerings and rituals were empty because their hearts were far from God. True worship isn’t just about giving; it’s about the heart behind the gift. God desires a willing, obedient heart over mere religious performance.
As we serve, give, and worship, do we do so with sincerity, or are we just checking a box? God sees beyond what we give—He sees why we give. When our hearts are in alignment with Him, our offerings become a pleasing sacrifice, just as they were in the Tabernacle.
Key Insights
- God values obedience and sincerity over outward displays – The Israelites’ craftsmanship for the Tabernacle was done according to God’s command, not for personal glory (Exodus 38:22). In contrast, the Pharisees sought recognition (Matthew 23:5). God desires a heart that gives in humble obedience.
- Justice, mercy, and faith are at the core of true worship – Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for tithing meticulously while ignoring weightier matters (Matthew 23:23). Worship is more than offerings—it’s about a life that reflects God’s character.
- A beautiful offering comes from a surrendered heart – The people gave willingly for the Tabernacle, and it was a collective effort (Exodus 36:5-7). God blesses when we give out of love, not obligation.
- God desires relationship, not empty ritual – The Pharisees honored God with their lips but rejected His presence (Matthew 23:37-38). True devotion is not about religious acts but about knowing and walking with God.
- Giving is an act of worship when done with love – Whether in time, talent, or treasure, when we offer ourselves to God with the right heart, it becomes worship.
Connection to Other Scripture
- 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV) – “Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” (God values obedience over ritual.)
- 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV) – “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” (Giving should be from the heart.)
- Micah 6:8 (KJV) – “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (God’s heart is for justice, mercy, and humility.)

A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that true worship is about my heart, not just my actions. Help me to give, serve, and worship with sincerity and love. Guard me from empty rituals and religious pride, and instead, lead me to a life marked by justice, mercy, and faith. Teach me to obey You in the small things and to offer my life as a willing sacrifice. May my service and my offerings always be a reflection of my love for You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
