Walking in Obedience and Wisdom

Morning: Joshua 7-8
Evening: Luke 2:25-52

In Joshua 7-8, we see a powerful lesson about obedience and the consequences of hidden sin. After the victory at Jericho, Israel suffered defeat at Ai because Achan took forbidden items, bringing judgment upon the whole nation. Only after confessing and removing the sin did God restore His favor, leading them to victory. This passage reminds us that unchecked sin hinders our spiritual progress, but repentance brings restoration.

In Luke 2:25-52, we encounter two remarkable individuals—Simeon and Anna—who walked in faithfulness, waiting on the Lord’s promise of the Messiah. Their devotion and patience were rewarded when they saw the infant Jesus. Later, we see young Jesus in the temple, astonishing the teachers with His wisdom, yet humbly submitting to His parents. His example teaches us that spiritual growth requires both wisdom and obedience.

Just as Israel had to walk in obedience to regain victory, and as Jesus grew in wisdom while submitting to God’s timing, we too must trust God’s ways. Hidden sin and disobedience can delay our blessings, but repentance and faithfulness will always lead us back into alignment with His plan.

Key Insights

  1. Sin Hinders Our Progress, but Repentance Brings Restoration – Like Achan’s sin delayed Israel’s victory, unconfessed sin can keep us from walking fully in God’s blessings (Joshua 7:1-26).
  2. Obedience Leads to Victory – Once Israel repented and followed God’s instructions, they defeated Ai. Our success is tied to our obedience to His Word (Joshua 8:1-29).
  3. God Honors Those Who Wait on Him – Simeon and Anna faithfully waited for the Messiah, and God rewarded their patience (Luke 2:25-38).
  4. Wisdom and Obedience Go Hand in Hand – Jesus displayed wisdom from a young age but also humbly submitted to His earthly parents, showing the balance of knowledge and obedience (Luke 2:41-52).
  5. God’s Plans Unfold in His Perfect Timing – Whether waiting for a breakthrough like Israel or waiting for a promise like Simeon and Anna, trusting in God’s timing is key.

Connection to Other Scripture

  • Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV): “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
  • 1 John 1:9 (KJV): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
  • Isaiah 40:31 (KJV): “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

  5. In what areas of my life do I need to trust God’s timing instead of rushing ahead?
