Why Denomination Matters

In today’s world, there are countless denominations, each claiming to represent the truth. But not all of them believe in or teach about the Jesus of the Bible. Some redefine who Jesus is, while others add their own books to the Bible, claiming these align with Scripture. Yet Jesus Himself warned us in Matthew 24:11 that false prophets would arise in the last days, and in Revelation 22:18-19, He made it clear that we should neither add to nor take away from God’s Word.

Denominations can also differ in how they interpret fundamental truths. Some twist the definitions of sin, the fruit of the Spirit, and even the very foundation of salvation. These distortions can mislead people, causing them to stray from the roadmap to heaven—the Bible. Choosing the right denomination matters because it influences your understanding of salvation and your relationship with God.

Let me share an example. I once invited a man to lunch who had attended various churches in town. He asked me, “What does it really take to be saved?” He had been told by one church that he must be baptized and speak in tongues to receive salvation. I gently corrected him with Scripture, explaining the biblical meaning of speaking in tongues and the true requirements for salvation. Misunderstandings like these highlight why it’s crucial to be part of a denomination that faithfully teaches the Bible as it is written.

The Bible is our guide to heaven, and if we misunderstand its message, it could cost us our soul. This is why we must carefully choose a church and denomination that stays true to God’s Word.

Identifying False Churches

Not all churches align with Scripture. Here are some warning signs:

  • A Different Gospel: Any church that claims all you need to be saved is to join them is misleading you.
  • Materialism: Churches led by materialistic pastors or obsessed with worldly wealth are not spiritually alive.
  • Twisting Doctrine: Churches that teach “once saved, always saved” without requiring holiness or obedience to God’s Word are distorting the truth.
  • Denial of Sin: Churches that don’t acknowledge the reality of sin or preach against it are leading people astray.
  • Lack of the Fruit of the Spirit: If the leaders and members do not exhibit love, joy, peace, patience, and the other fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23), it’s a sign of spiritual decay.
  • Focus on Temporal Gains: Churches where testimonies are all about material wealth or personal gain, rather than spiritual growth, are spiritually dead.
  • Denying God’s Nature: The Bible clearly states that it is God’s will for us to live in holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3), and He desires no one to perish (2 Peter 3:9). Any church teaching that only a select few will be saved denies God’s gift of free will. This doctrine creates confusion because it undermines God’s design and contradicts the biblical teaching that salvation is available to all who believe and repent.
  • Too Worldly: Progressive churches that allow gay marriage or adopt the “love is love” ideology stray from biblical teaching. God’s love includes correction, not affirmation of sin (Hebrews 12:6). You’ll also notice signs of worldliness in the way members dress, the church’s tolerance of “gray areas,” and a lack of emphasis on living a life separated from worldly influences (Romans 12:2). A church without a strong call to holiness is likely a spiritually dead church.

How to Find a Good Church

To discern between a good and bad church, you need to be deeply rooted in God’s Word and commune with Him in prayer. “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). God is faithful and will guide you to the right church if you truly seek Him.

Remember, Satan is actively trying to twist God’s Word to lead souls astray. Jesus warned us about this, and the Bible gives us clear instructions. “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14). If a church does not preach holiness or the importance of living and remaining holy, you should prayerfully reconsider staying there.

Why the Right Denomination Matters

The denomination you choose determines how you understand the foundations of salvation and your walk with Christ. A good church will guide you to live a holy life, encourage you to grow in your faith, and stay true to God’s Word. If you’re struggling to find a church like this, we can help.

Let’s all remember: this isn’t about being judgmental but about seeking God’s truth. Your eternity depends on it. The Bible is clear, and God’s Word is unchanging. Let’s walk together in faith, discernment, and holiness, trusting God to lead us to where we need to be.
